Learning Digitally: Empowerment with Responsbility

This week at my school, Beijing BISS International School here in Beijing China, I was invited to be the 'distinguished speaker' of the month. I was asked to provide a 'parent friendly' topic about getting to know the online world of children, providing insight as well as solutions to characteristics of the 'net generation'.

So, if you know me at all you will understand I am not one to talk about 'dangers' at great length, but prefer to talk in more positive terms, and put the responsibility back on the parent and the student, and prefer education and raised awareness in favour of restricted use of resources.  My talk, entitled "Learning Digitally: Empowerment with Responsibility" was designed in four parts:
  1. Part 1 - Understanding he digital generation.
  2. Part 2 - Advantages of technology.
  3. Part 3 - Digital citizenship.
  4. Part 4 - Strategies and solutions for common parental concerns.
My wiki has a list of resources, and here is the slideshow.  Your comments are welcome as to how I can improve this next time around.

Special Announcement - International Audience Votes for Most Successtul Projects

One exciting outcome of the Flat Classroom Conference 2011, held here in Beijing a few weeks ago, is the production of student films that attempt to share each teams ideas created from the action project as part of the Student Summit.

The top 6 teams had a chance to create these films, which we then put out there for an international vote. We now have the 'winners', and I put this in inverted commas, as ALL teams have great ideas and very successfully created the multimedia to communicate these. However, here are the four that have caught the attention of the international viewers as being the ones having the most potential if implemented.

Student Projects:
First Place:
Team 9 Movement 9

Second place: Team 19 Enermeter
Third place (tied): Team 1 Culture Connect and Team 6 Clear Water

In addition, Leadership Workshop teams of educators also created new curriculum desugns that integrated global collaboration. Here is the project voted as the best!
Top Teacher Project - Team 10 Tackling Transport Together

Congratulations to the above teams who have been recognised by supportive viewers virtually. All conference material can be found on or linked from the Flat Classroom Conference Ning, and the Conference 2011 wiki
