How to attend the Global Education Conference!

The Global Education Conference (GEC) is on for the third consecutive year and is bigger and better than ever. Over 400 presentations, including Keynotes, will be delivered across 5 days, 24 hours of the day. Thanks to Lucy Gray and Steve Hargadon and the many other international advisors, the website is looking good and ready to go. You can access the sessions and schedule in any time zone you need. Volunteers are being called for to help with session moderation and general organisation during the event. Volunteering is an excellent way to meet new people from many different parts of the world.

We encourage you to attend GEC as it is totally free and totally online, and there is ALWAYS something in your timezone when you are free for an hour or two during the day. Help is also needed to promote this further leading into next week, so we encourage you to also spread the word and share any press materials or badges.

Flat Classroom are excited to share with you the MANY presentations scheduled for the Global Education Conference, November 12-16, 2012 (next week!) from our very own Flat Classroom teachers and friends! Here a list of Flat Classroom teachers and Flat Classroom Certified Teachers who are presenting at GEC. Please support them, add their sessions to your calendar. You will learn a lot about Flat Classroom projects across K-12, as well as a lot about other global projects and global collaboration generally.

Not sure how to attend?
An online conference can be daunting - especially one that runs 24 hours a day, 5 days in a row! How do you access this? How do you make the most of this opportunity?
Black board Collaborate is the virtual classroom for presentations during the conference. Make sure you have downloaded the Java app necessary before you want to attend a session. It is easy to do, but if you are opening Blackboard for the first time it may take a few minutes.
Here is a short video to help you learn how to access the tools and be comfortable in this environment.
Thank you to the multimedia students at Middle Bucks Institute for Technology who created this video

This video provides clear instructions on how to participate, how to find the sessions in YOUR time zone and how to access the Blackboard Collaborate rooms.
Thank you to the multimedia students at Middle Bucks Institute for Technology who created this video.

In addition - a SPECIAL invitation for those with students in upper middle and high school. Are you promoting 'leadership'? Do you have students who want to develop leadership skills, who want to share your ideas and meet other students online? Do you have students who want to discuss how positive change can be made in the world and plan with others how to do this? If so we invite you to encourage them to join the Global Student Leadership Forum (the NEW name is Global Think Tank - to be announced at the launch!). Flat Classroom and THINK Global School have joined together to support this student initiative. The launch is during GEC, and we invite you to attend, and your students to attend. All details HERE. Sign up to be sent more information HERE.

Here are some recommendations for sessions to attend, especially for middle and high school teachers,  (don't worry, by Nov 12 each link below will also have the session time and link to the Blackboard Collaborate room to attend). It is impossible to be part of everything...BUT each session will be recorded and you can also access it after the conference!

Don't forget to LIKE the Global Education Facebook page. If you are tweeting this on, please use the #globaled12 hashtag, and follow this tag next week!

Finally, help us to promote the conference through your networks. Promotion via Badges and Press releases.

Have a great Global Education Conference everyone!

Digital Dimensions in Manila

In September I was delighted to travel to Manila and run a 2-day EARCOS supported workshop called 'Digital Dimensions' at the Brent International School, Manila in the Philippines. This was my first trip to Manila, and my first opportunity to learn more about schools and education in the Philippines. As part of the trip I also visited the EARCOS office, based on the Brent campus and met most of the staff.

I also spent some time with Rina Bautusta (President) and Edric and Doris from the Knowledge Channel Foundation based in Manila. This was an enlightening time as I learned about the TV shows the KC create and disseminate, and how many communities throughout the Philippines are not connected or have very little access to the Internet therefore television remains a major means of multimedia content for education. We talked a lot how to improve learning and access to digital resources in underprivileged communities. Teachers across the country are wanting to learn new methods but often lack support and facility to implement these. There is no easy answer, and real change will only come when infrastructure across the country is improved, however I do feel there is a lot that can be done to change pedagogical approach even before full or regular access to online tools is available.

Rina also provided an opportunity for me to speak with other educators and also representatives from other organisations AND the Filipino Education Department at The Beacon School, which is a Filipino Community IB World School led by Principal Mary Chua. This was an excellent session and I spoke about Flat Classroom as well as ISTE and the support this global organisation can provide to teachers, as well as 21st Century learning.

The Digital Dimensions Workshop was held over 2 days with about 35 teachers, mostly from Brent IS.

Workshop Overview
What will your digital journey be like this year? Let's kick-start the adventure now in this hands-on, project-based, collaborative workshop. Explore exciting Web 2.0 tools (like blogs, wikis, podcasts, Twitter, digital storytelling, and social bookmarking). In addition, explore digital media to support learning and formative as well as authentic assessment across the curriculum. An essential element of the workshop is to work together in a constructivist learning environment, and by using global collaboration tools, work on a tangible product(s) that can be used immediately in the classroom. This workshop is designed to open doors to new modes of teaching and learning and focus on the learner (teacher and student) as a communicator, collaborator and creator.

Workshop Outcomes
During this workshop, participants will deepen understanding of how to:
  • integrate the use of Web 2.0 tools into the daily life of an educator;
  • work as a collaborative team and explore the potential of global collaboration in the curriculum
  • develop quality digital assessment tasks and associated rubrics; and,
  • support project-based digital learning.
The workshop schedule shows how I crafted activities for teachers to kick-start their thinking, learn more about Web 2.0 tools, emerging technologies and 21C objectives before moving into a team project. We also looked at what it means to go global and integrate global projects into the curriculum and managed to talk about assessment in a digital learning environment. Above all we had some fun! I invite you to review the Team products, linked from the TEAM Master list. The task given was for teachers in teams of similar levels or disciplines to create a lesson or assignment or project that opened up new opportunities for learning by:
  • Integrating Web 2.0 and emerging technologies
  • 'Flattening' the classroom locally and /or globally
  • Modelling collaborative learning modes as process and as part of project design
Participants gathered onto the Learning Confluence Ning to form an online learning community, and also joined the wiki to contribute their ideas and build their team project. It is important to gather people together during a workshop and provide an online learning environment for them to interact and share ideas. This environment is temporary and transient, it is not meant to sustain as a community necessarily, but it is an important aspect of not only talking about digital learning in the classroom, but modelling this learning. What is also very important is that participants can readily find the workshop material after the event, and in fact can find each other via their presence on both the Ning and the wiki, both of which it is my responsibility to make sure are there and not taken down in the near future.

Some comments from participants:
"I will use much better/interesting presentation of ideas than I have been and I will work on promoting/facilitating deeper 'discovery' using tech tools. I have a much better understanding of how I can use Delicious effectively to help guide students." Joseph Levno, Director of Academic Affairs, Brent IS
"Where can I take this? It feels like the possibilities are endless!" Mary Meikle English Lit and ESL Upper School, Brent IS
"This is a timely workshop, others should also find time to go." anon
